I recently changed my thought process on the responsibility of readers and writers. I think it is the responsibility of the writer to say something interesting, and then publish said interesting thing somewhere where it can be reached by readers. I think it’s an element of the modern freneticism of the Internet that we expect instant eyeballs. Old writing is constantly reinvigorated by new readers. In fact, that is the only way that it can continue to live. It is the responsibility of the reader to decide whether a piece of writing is important or not in their context. As such, I’ve been blogging quite a bit. Because posting on a blog allows for the critical mass of future readers. Anything interesting that I happen to say can be found through a medium that reaches billions of people. Today, or in the future. HTTP is basically the printing press. And my website is my media company. Just because billions of people aren’t consistently reading what’s written, doesn’t mean that the writer has lost their responsibility to write.

I prepare to go to the pool but arrive there to find it closed. Now, imagine that I put on my shoes, get my keys, drive to the pool, and face the closed door not once, but repeatedly and intentionally. I keep doing so (I imagine) because I enjoy putting on my shoes, getting my keys, and so on—that is, because of my very doing of these actions. Behaving this way would surely indicate a sort of sickness; if I can’t go to the pool, I should do something else. Yet we do something like this when we remain trapped in our endlessly busy, workaholic selves. We work for the sake of money, which supports our continued work. We work even harder, for even more money, which we have even less time to spend on anything but supporting our work. Work for the sake of work is pointless; it ought to culminate in something further. But it does not feel pointless, because we thrill in our own action and experience.

As more people kept collections of … information in books of their own, the tradition became less respected. While early modern commonplacing was reserved for classically educated men, nineteenth-century commonplacing was for “everyone,”
Unlike modern readers, who follow the flow of a narrative from beginning to end, early modern Englishmen read in fits and starts and jumped from book to book. They broke texts into fragments and assembled them into new patterns by transcribing them in different sections of their notebooks
Even though the vast majority of nineteenth-century authors knew about commonplacing, they did not always use the name. Coleridge called his later collection “Fly-Catchers,” Walter Scott used the Latin title “Adversaria,” while George Eliot referred to one of her commonplace books as “Quarry,”
the utility of this commonplace book rests entirely in the reader’s hands. It is a modest work, in her opinion: “truly what its name sets forth—a book of common-places and nothing more
there’s one foolproof method for turning Ikea rage into grudging respect: assembling almost any other brand of furniture
whatever your most frustrating Ikea experience is, it could have been worse—and most likely was for the packaging engineer who test-assembled even more complicated versions of the product before arriving at the optimized design that you unboxed on your living room floor.
A newspaper in Sweden described Ikea [furniture assembly] as something between civil engineering and captaining a submarine
People only really know two to four of the things that you did during your life. For example, Michelangelo - they know “Pietà,” “David,” and the Sistine Chapel. Or for Jackson Pollock, they know the art style that he became famous for. Same with Andy Warhol and the pop art.
I love Leonardo da Vinci’s sketchbooks - obviously he has a few famous pieces of work, but the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are not what made him interesting as an individual. It was his codexes and his quirks that made him fascinating.
If this thing goes well after launch, I feel like a lot of the people who I told about before the launch will come back and be like “Oh wow, how successful is XYZ.” Because I saw that with OpenAI, and I had much less to do with OpenAI than I do with Your Commonbase.

Most sidebars in writing are ultimately you letting the audience know that you know the wider scope of what you’re writing about so they don’t nitpick you on it. Avoid that posturing, nobody gets anything out of it.
It’s usually quite fun and easy to hammer out the main point of a post, but it can be surprisingly difficult to then neatly round it off. Instead of leaving posts as a boring todo chore in the drafts folder, it’s perfectly fine to just stop cold and publish if a wrap up doesn’t flow naturally.
Porn is a matter of bare life on display. The antagonist of eros, it annihilates even sexuality. In this respect, it is more effective than morality: “Sexuality does not fade into sublimation, repression and morality, but fades much more surely into the more sexual than sex: porn."
consumer culture is constantly producing new wants and needs by means of media images and narratives. But desire is something different from both wanting and needing. Today’s computerized high-definition imagery eliminates vagueness and ambiguity. Information and fantasy are opposing forces.
Hypervisibility is not conducive to imagination. As such, pornography—which maximizes visual information, as it were—destroys erotic fantasy.

If the deepest sources of the morbid imagination that falls on one by night —of the voluptuous imagination, inducer of sensual abandon—lie, one and all, in death, how does that death differ from the glorious death? What distinguishes the heroic from the decadent death?
It is the hours in which one is alone that amount to the difference between death and life.

…everything, including physical activities, involves trade-offs and risks. Despite having evolved to get pregnant, eat, and walk, pregnant mothers often get back pain, people sometimes choke on their food, and people everywhere trip and sprain their ankles. Why would running be any different?
But the trend in a lot of the algorithm…community has not been to my liking when they have lots of data structures that are just … baroque. They’re intricate and clever … but I find them sterile. They don’t connect with life; they’re working in another world.
Owning a home is still a fundamental value, but the community in which it resides has become increasingly important. Today, houses in walkable urban environments are by far the most expensive in the country, with a value 40 to 200 percent higher than comparable ones in the suburbs.
Structures like the triple-decker are examples of how the streetcar of the late 1800s freed urban housing from tiny lots, dark and narrow row houses, and claustrophobic tenements
Artists colonize an inexpensive area, … which offer lots of room for lofts and studios. They open alternative art spaces… and throw parties in the warehouses … The area becomes cool, which attracts the hipsters, who may be understood as fake bohemians with an entrepreneurial glint in their eye
“It was tight at first, and I kept pushing it down further and further.” ((giggity)) He recommended resisting the urge to cough (duh), and also oiled the blade to reduce the abrasion as it slides down the throat.
Adams – recommends wiping the blade before and after swallowing: the first, to remove any dust which could trigger the gag reflex, and afterwards to remove stomach acid, which could corrode the blade’s metal.
The appearance of conforming gets you a long way.'' If you chose to assert your ego in any number of ways, `I am going to do it my way,' you pay a small steady price throughout the whole of your professional career. And this, over a whole lifetime, adds up to an enormous amount of needless trouble.
This leads me to one final principle: have power, respect power, and use power wisely. … power will win out over agreements, rules, and laws all the time. When push comes to shove, those who have the power to either enforce their interpretation of the rules … to overturn them …
It’s easy to forget we have status to give, that it costs nothing and it never runs out. Creating small moments of prestige means always seeking opportunities to use it.

The main danger in the biosphere–culture analogy is that it encourages one to conceive of the human condition in a reductionist way that obliterates the…distinctions that are essential for understanding it – such as those between mindless and creative, determinism and choice, right and wrong.
Probably the most important tool in creativity is the use of an analogy. Something seems like something else which we knew in the past.
Today, humankind relies upon fuels that are up to one thousand times more power-dense than the buildings, factories, and cities they power. … Human civilization would have to occupy one hundred to one thousand times more space if it were to rely solely on renewables.
For in general there is neither a mean of an excess and of deficiency nor an excess and deficiency of a mean.
Further, it is more difficult to battle against pleasure than against spiritedness, as Heraclitus asserts, and art and virtue always arise in connection with that which is more difficult: the doing of something well is better when it is more difficult.
